Offbeat tourism at its best: Rama's Huts near Mombasa. Experience real village life, real hospitality, the real Kenya.
If it's luxury you're after, this is not for you, but if you like the sound of a warm welcome, delicious food, getting to know everyone by storm lantern and star light, to the sound of bush babies, in the heart of a mango and cashew tree shaded village, give it a go! Of course it helps that the huts are also spotlessly clean, comfortable and come fully equipped with mosquito nets.
The majority of what you'll consume during your stay will have come from within 5km of the village, your hot water and electricity will be solar powered and you're unlikely to see any cars unless you arrive/leave in one. Staying here means you'll be contributing to the village community's sustainable tourism endeavour and helping to provide work in an area with 40% unemployment.
The stunning white sands of the vast and often deserted Tiwi Beach are walkable from the village. One of Kenya's finest, Tiwi Beach comes complete with natural coral swimming pools and all sorts to explore when the tide goes out over the reef.
Breakfast is included in the cost of your stay and Alice, Rama's wife, can provide delicious lunches and suppers for an additional charge of $5.
The family have four huts, each sleeps two people, three if one of you is happy to sleep in a hammock. The prices listed here are per hut, not for all four huts.
