The Coast Province region
Diani Beach is located at the very end of Kenya's south coast on the Indian Ocean and is regarded as one of the most beautiful palm beaches worldwide. The offshore coral reef protects the coastline from huge waves so it is possible to go swimming by either high or low tide and it is also a nice place for children. When the tide is low it is even possible to walk to the coral reef in the waist-high water in some places but it is advisable to wear some type of water shoes. The broad, white sandy beach is mostly deserted and a great place for lang walks.
On the 13km (8mi) long Diani Beach are a few hotels, which are all exemplary integrated into the landscape, nice beach bars, boutiques, shops, surfing schools, diving schools, safari companies, banks and rental locations for cars, quads and bikes.
Kenya is a year-round travel destination and each season is uniquely attractive. From December to March it is rather hot and dry whereas it is more humid and moderate from June to October (compareable with a nice day in mid-European summer). The temperature at night will never go below 22 degrees C (70 degrees Fahrenheit) all year round. The water temperature of the Indian Ocean is mostly between 25 and 29 degrees C (between 77 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit).
Travel restrictions can occur during the rain season from April to mid-May and from October to mid-November. During that times certain roads and whole areas can be flooded and impassable. The rain season on the coast consists mostly of alternating severe but short showers and sunshine.
Distance: It takes 1 hour to Mombasa and roughly 80 minutes to Mombasa International Airport. The small domestic airport which is mostly used for trips to Masai Mara, Kilimanjaro or Serengeti is roughly 15 minutes away. The typical African life can be experienced in Ukunda, which is about 10km away. To the Diani Beach Hospital it is 6km.
There are many different activities nearby to choose from. For example: Swimming, windsurfing, kitesurfing (Diani Beach is regarded as one of the best kitesurfing locations worldwide), scuba-diving, sea angling, golf, fitness training, tennis, horse riding, trips by car, motorcycle, quad, bike or boat...
Safaris can either be done by car (to Tsavo West, Tsavo East or Ambroseli National Park) or you can fly directly to the legendary Masai Mara or Tanzania from the small safari airport in Ukunda 15 minutes from the estate. Villa Kapungu is also a good starting point for daytrips to Wasini Islands or Shimba Hills National Park. We are happy to book a customized safari for you - feel free to contact us.
Golf: Kenya is ideal for golfers due to the very appealing year-round golf course with seaviews and picturesque views onto the African bush. 'Leisure Lodge Golf and Country Club' 18 hole course is located 5 minutes by car from Villa Kapungu and is the only golf course on Kenya's south coast. This golf course is ideal for beginners but it also offers a good challenge for experienced golfers.
Recommended restaurants nearby:
- Sails Beach Bar & Restaurant
- Colobus Shade
- Nomad's Beach Restaurant and Bar
- Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant and Fourty Thieves Bar
- Africa Pot
Shopping: There are shopping centers, grocery stores, boutiques and banks in the area. The large shopping center 'Nakumat' is roughly 4km away and offers a broad range of Kenyan and international products including groceries, electric appliances, toiletries, household items, books (in English language), CDs, prepaid phones, prepaid internet. If you don't want to go as far there is also the Diani Beach Shopping Center which can be easily reached by bike.
Fresh fruits and vegetables can best be bought directly at street booths. However you can get the chef to do the grocery shopping for you.
Upon request the chef can organize a fisher to come to the Villa with fresh seafood for a reasonable price.

"The vacation of a life time"
We spent two wonderful weeks at Villa Kapungu in March of 2014, from the moment we arrived to the minute we left we felt completely at home by not only the staff working at the house, but also the extended network of friends and "fixers" that Jasmin has built up in Diani beach. From hiring a car last minute, to arranging a diving trip on a Dhow, or a two day Air Safari to the Masai Mara, or sourcing fresh tuna for dinner that same night, nothing was out of the question. The house (and guest house) are beautifully appointed, and really are a slice of paradise. With great beach bars and restaurants only minutes away (including an amazing a la carte restaurant in a limestone cave) should you ever get tired of Kahindi's (the chef) amazing food then alternatives are right on your doorstep. The pool is big enough that even with 4 children under the age of ten trying to out-do each other on the diving front and non stop under water swimming competitions, there was still enough space for two sets of parents to cool off when it got too hot. The fully equipped gym in the guest house was a welcome bonus, and allowed for the amazing food prepared fresh each day to be worked off each morning. I can not recommend Villa Kapungu enough, and would suggest that you allow Jasmin to take care of organising your complete trip (from touching down in Nairobi) as the the travel agents and ground transport team she has built up is second to none (so much so that when we found ourselves with a 5 hour stop over in Nairobi before our flight home, the driver Jasmin had arranged took us for dinner at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi, rather than simply drop us at the airport and leave us to deal with sandwiches and instant coffee!). 10 out of 10 on all fronts, and one of the best holidays we have ever had..
