The Central Southern England / Wiltshire region

There is a lot to occupy even the most seasoned traveller. We have listed here a selection of our favourite local attractions, starting with the local town of:
BATH
Visitors to the cottage are approx 25mins away from Bath and the stunning countryside surrounding it. It is one of England's most beautiful places to visit and you can easily access it by car or rail (from Westbury Station). It is a unique city with plenty of fantastic shops, eateries, parks and historical sites, including the world famous hot springs, Roman Baths and the splendid Abbey. The Georgian stone crescents have attracted visitors for centuries. Read more at http://www.visitbath.co.uk and remember to check out the festival calendar as numerous food, literature and music festivals take place throughout the year.
STONEHENGE
This needs little introduction! Just 20minutes from the cottage is the historic site of Stonehenge – recently voted Britain’s Best Historic Site by viewers of the UK TV History Channel. Erected between 3,000 BC and 1,600BC by no less than three different cultures it remains an intriguing site steeped in history and mystery! The orientation of the site on the rising and setting of the sun has always been one of its remarkable features.
SALISBURY
Whether a first-time visitor to the city or a regular, the awesome sight of Salisbury Cathedral spire never fails to impress: soaring a breathtaking 123 metres (404 feet) into the sky, it is visible from every direction, dominating the landscape for many miles around. Just approx 35 mins from the cottage, it is arguably the finest example of the Early English Gothic style of architecture in Britain. In the Cathedral itself you'll find the best preserved of only four original Magna Carta (AD1215) - the famous agreement made between King John and his barons at Runnymede, the basic principles of which have been incorporated into the constitution of the USA, and Europe's oldest working clock (AD1386).
The city itself is not just rich in culture and architecture, it will also please food lovers and shoppers alike!
LONGLEAT SAFARI, STATELY HOME, THEME PARK
A fantastic day out. Stately Home, safari and theme park all combine to make this one of the best value and most popular days out in the UK (Sunday Times, 2008). The beautiful Elizabethan stately home is set in 900 acres of landscaped parkland, with another 9000 acres of woodland, lakes and farmland. Aside from the remarkable house, visitors can enjoy incredibly close encounters with some of the world’s most amazing animals in the drive through Safari Park (as shown on the BBC TV series). Tigers, lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, wolves and meddling monkeys are just some of the creatures to look out for. Then there are the family friendly attractions – the adventure castle, safari boats, pets corner, postman pat village, longleat railway, old Joe’s mine, motion simulators, teacup rides, lazytown feature and more. It is understandable why visitors buy a ‘longleat passport’ so they can return more than once for a great price. See www.longleat.co.uk for more details. Again, just 20-25minutes from the cottage by car.
STOURHEAD GARDENS
A World Heritage site. Outstanding stately home and garden, almost guaranteed to take one’s breath away. The world-famous gardens with it central lake and classical temples are beautiful at any time of year. The palladium mansion is filled with Georgian treasures, Chippendale furniture and fine paintings. And there are stunning woodland walks, enchanting temples, monuments and rare planting around a tranquil lake. Spectacular views from the top of King Alfred's Tower, one of the finest follies in Britain and two Iron Age hill forts to explore make this a lovely day out. See www.nationaltrust.org.uk/stourhead for more information.
LACOCK
We are very fond of Lacock, and not just because it was the setting for feature films such as Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice, Cranford, The Other Boleyn Girl and Wolfman. The village dates back to the 13th century and it has remained largely unchanged with beautiful lime washed and stone houses. It has wonderful old tea rooms, an old bakery, a babbling brook (which we always walk through no matter how cold it is!), and several splendid pubs selling quality ales and fine wines. There are antique shops, jewellery shops and other such purveyors of old fashioned quality goods. And of course there is the National Trust Lacock Abbey - a Medieval cloistered abbey converted into a fine country house. It has a newly-restored botanic gardens and greenhouse and a fascinating museum dedicated to the 'Father of Modern Photography'. For parents, there is also a fantastic little park area with an assault course activity trail as well as the usual swings and slide etc. Also approx 25 mins from the cottage by car. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock
BRADFORD UPON AVON
Another must see location, also just 25mins from the cottage, by car. The town’s position on the Avon river gives it its magical appeal. It is an unspoilt market town which is the last outpost of the Cotswolds in the western corner of Wiltshire, and there are delightful shops, restaurants, pubs and walks to be enjoyed. There is a beautiful walk along the canal, pubs with stunning views and glorious old England architecture. http://www.cotswolds.info/places/bradford-on-avon.shtml
The Devizes / Erlestoke area
DEVIZES
Just 10 minutes from the cottage, you will find the lovely historic market town of Devizes, with its impressive architecture and central square containing ample parking, cafes, restaurants and tourist information. On Thursdays, Devizes is filled with people making their way to the weekly market (first held in 1609). Small, specialist shops can also be found hidden away in courtyards and alleyways.
The 11th century town marries old (for example, Norman churches) with new such as a large fitness centre with swimming pool, and kids park (newly opened for youngsters and next to the duck pond). And of course there is the famous brewery – well worth a visit.
There is an annual carnival that usually takes place over 2 weeks in August. For further information visit http://www.devizescarnival.co.uk/ and there is a Christmas festival too. There is also regular entertainment at Wharf Theatre www.wharftheatre.co.uk where a wide range of productions from opera to comedy to classics are staged.
For music lovers there is “Jazz at the Bear” in the historic 14th century cellar bar of the Bear Hotel. It is a major venue for weekly live blues and Jazz. People travel for miles to enjoy live music every Friday and Saturday night, except in the summer and December when events are confined to Fridays only. Email jazz@thebearhotel.net for details on upcoming events. Aside from “the Bear” there are many traditional pubs to enjoy, many serving food made from local produce.
Aside from popular eateries such as Pizza Express and a newly opened Wetherspoons, there are lots of independent coffee shops and cafes catering to all types of tastes.
And for families of young children that need a good run around, aside from the local sports centre, duck pond, park and swings, there is a huge indoor play area http://www.coral-cove.co.uk/ - especially useful on rainy days!
But of course, one of the major local attractions is the Kennet and Avon canal that runs through the centre of Devizes. And most visitors are attracted to John Rennies impressive Caen Hill Flight – a staircase of 16 locks said to be the most striking on any UK waterway. There is a café at the site serving delicious food, much of which is made from local produce.
A final word on Devizes, the local town. Erlestoke is one of many ‘Devizes villages’ – most of which contain beautiful architecture and a very welcoming pub. Yew Tree cottage contains an Ordinance Survey map and it is well worth cycling or driving to the nearby local villages to enjoy the stunning countryside, see the white horse etched into the hills, view the chocolate box thatched houses and enjoy the charming local pubs.

"Thank you for a wonderful week! We loved Avebury (been there before but was worth another visit), Lacock and Max loved Bowood and the Steam museum in Swindon. So much to do and see… And we loved your beautiful cottage!! Very nice, felt just like home. Thank you again! Martijn, Manon and Max
Staying at your place has been a wonderful time for us. The Wiltshire is an enchanting area. Everything was perfect.
Best regards.
Barabel Family, France
We had a lovely time - it was a pleasure to stay in your beautiful home. I hope you found the letter our daughter wrote you? Thanks for everything. Lisa, England.
Thank you so so much for the use of your beautiful cottage. We have had an absolutely brilliant time. It is a gorgeous place and the location is superb. Adam&Lauren, Torquay, England.
All was positive about the cottage - it was the extras that really mattered like the nice knives, crockery, pans, good quality docking station etc. Also the children stuff means you don't have to pack so much. We normally look forward to coming home by the end of a holiday but we really didn't want to - Matilda included! We have recommended you to my father in law and we may even return ourselves. It was especially nice that the cottage felt like a home and not a rental. Thanks again, Rachel, Andrew and family
Hi Sara, I just wanted to let you know how much we liked your cottage and enjoyed our few days there. The location is just perfect and all the little extras in the cottage made us feel really at home. Both the children loved it which isn't always easy with such a big age gap (8yrs and 1 yr.). Thank you very much and we may well be asking to stay in your cottage again. Yours, Lucinda
Sara, Thanks for helping us have a great week by letting us use your house. We had a lovely holiday. The cottage is so cosy and welcoming, and had everything we needed. We like your taste in soft furnishings! We found so much to explore in the area, and did go out to walk from the house with Iona in the backpack. We will more than happily recommend Yew Tree cottage as a wonderful place to stay. All the best for the rest of the season. Lesley & Andrew
Dear Sara. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your cottage, truly perfect. Thank you, Fiona.
