The Central Southern England / Wiltshire region
Bath will be high on your list of places to visit while you are staying at Hinton Lodge. A World Heritage City, with Georgian architecture and the Roman Baths, as well as numerous festivals throughout the year encompassing music, literature and food as well as the Christmas Market which sells festive and European gifts and produce.
The counties of Somerset and Wiltshire are rich in farmland and for this reason there are farmers markets and farm shops aplenty offering organic and fairtrade cheese, butter, milk, meat and chicken as well as locally made jams and chutneys. Enjoying local food, is what makes a visit to this area extra special.
Some of the picturesque towns nearby are Corsham, Bradford on Avon and the National Trust village of Lacock which is regularly used for filming, most recently the latest Judi Dench "Barchester Chronicles" to be screened in October and in the past, the Harry Potter films.
Avebury's stone circles create the most extraordinary atmosphere particularly if you can see them at dusk or dawn and archaeologists still struggle with the answer to why Silbury Hill was built. The same eerie feeling can also be found at Old Sarum and Old Waldour Castle, also look out for the white horses carved into a number of hillsides around the county.
Wiltshire spreads from the Cotswolds and Swindon in the north to the cathedral city of Salisbury in the south, from Bath in the west to Marlborough in the east. In its midst are bustling and traditional market towns such as Malmesbury, Bradford-on-Avon and Devizes which still serve the local farming communities as they have done for centuries.
Devizes / Great Hinton area
There are a multitude of things to do from Hinton Lodge. Hinton Lodge is conveniently located amidst a wide range of attractive places of interest and heritage sites such as:
Stonehenge and Avebury - within half an hour's drive you can visit the world's famous site of Stonehenge. Stonehenge was built 4000 years ago and its great stones still exert mystical fascination on thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. The slightly less well known but nonetheless fascinating stone circle site of Avebury offers an equally exciting atmosphere. Bath - within 30 minutes, you will be able to visit Bath, one of the most beautiful cities in Britain with its famous Roman baths, its very attractive Royal Crescent, etc., as well as its great shopping and restaurants. Salisbury - another city worth a mention, which is again within a reasonable drive (40 minutes). Salisbury offers much to its visitors with its beautiful cathedral, great shops, etc. Longleat House, gardens, safari and children attractions provides a fantastic day out for the whole family. Children can't get enough of it! A range of lovely little market towns such as Bradford-on-Avon (great antique shops), Devizes (its many famous canal locks), Melksham, Marlborough are all within easy distance and worth a visit. Don't miss Polly's Tea Room in Marlborough for its afternoon tea! Several picturesque villages such as Lacock and Castle Coombe are also well worth a visit.
If you are more of an outdoor type, you could always: GO gliding at the Bannerdown gliding club during the weekends. GO cycling on the Wiltshire Cycle Way - 2 adult bicycles are available for hire at Hinton Lodge. GO walking on the White Horse Way. GO cruising on the Kennet and Avon Canal.
