The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
The Charente is said to be the second sunniest region in France, something to be considered when looking for a holiday locaction! Churches from the 11th and 12th century are scattered across this rural landscape. Angouleme the regional capital has the very impressive 12th century cathedral 'St Pierre'. Boat trips can be taken along the river Charente which runs for 360 kms from the Haute-Vienne through the region into the Atlantic Ocean. Man-made lakes with beaches and picnic areas are easily accessed and the Atlantic coast is within an hours drive.
Deviat area
Deviat is a sleepy French village which has changed little over the centuries. The local 'depot de pain' where you buy fresh bread daily also doubles up as the post office and cafe/bar. Sunflowers and vines dominate the landscape making it a beautiful area to walk. Birdwatchers will delight with the abundance of birds of prey and it is not unusual to see deer and wild boar. Local 'Brocantes' and Fetes' run the entire summer and Angouleme hosts the famous classic car race around the city 'Ramparts' each September. The best time is really had by having the pool and garden on your doorstep with the Charentaise climate to enjoy it all in.
How to get there
The nearest airport is now Angouleme coming in from London Stansted, this makes it only a 30 minute drive to Deviat. Others available are Bordeaux, Poitiers, Limoges and Bergerac and La Rochelle, all approx 1/1.45 hours drive, there are car hire facilities at all airports. Channel crossings and then travelling by toll roads from northern France takes approx 8 hours, toll costs are around 47 euros. By rail from London St Pancras into Angouleme changeing at Lille or Paris takes approx 7 hours, costing on average £100.00. The train also stops at Charles de Gaulle airport if flying into Paris. Europcar has competitive prices for car hire. Speedferries seem to be reasonable for Channel crossings.
