The Lombardy / Lake Garda Area
Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, is located in Northern Italy about half-way between Venice and Milan. Originally known as Benaco, it was much loved by Virgil, Catullus and Goethe and has a very rich and interesting history, with monuments dating from Roman times through the 19th century. The lake has many attractions for visitors: a mild climate, beautiful and varied scenery, from the rolling hills at the Southern end to rugged mountain landscape of the Northern end. Hills are covered with olive trees and vineyards, each punctuated by its castle, looking over the most azure lake of Italy: a truly idillic spot. The area around Lake Garda is rich of beaches, parks, gardens, large country houses built around the wealthy towns of Desenzano, Salò, Gardone Riviera, Fasano and Maderno. There are a number of amusement parks and sporting grounds and during the winter season there is plenty of good skiing on the spacious snowfields of Monte Baldo.
Desenzano del Garda area
Desenzano is the largest and liveliest town in the south of Lake Garda, close to the Peninsula of Sirmione and is considered the capital of Lake Garda. It is home to many fine hotels, tourist resorts and its restaurants serve excellent dishes and famous wines (Lugana, Chiaretto, Rosso Riviera). Desenzano has numerous sports facilities (swimming pools, riding schools, golf clubs, tennis courts, yacht clubs) and places of culture, like civic museum, library, auditorium, convention centres. For evening outings, the lively and elegant town of Desenzano has plenty to offer: summer festivals, fine restaurants, night clubs or just romantic strolls by the lake, cute little villages and castles to be explored. The picturesque open-air market held every Tuesday has existed since the 15th century and the main street hosts some excellent shops and designer boutiques. Transportation connections are excellent. The Desenzano train station is on the Milan-Venice line, and there is a Desenzano exit on the A4 "Serenissima" Milan-Venice motorway.
How to get there
Airports: For those travelling from the UK: the nearest airport is Brescia, currently served only by Ryanair from London Stansted and various charter flights. Only 40 minutes away is Verona airport which is served by many major European airlines, including BA from Gatwick. About one hour away is Milano-Bergamo airport which receives mostly low-cost and charter airlines. Ryanair flies to Bergamo from Stansted and Luton, and so do other low-cost airlines from various UK airports. Milano-Malpensa is a discouraging four hours away while Milano-Linate is about 2 hours’ drive (Linate is also accessible by short bus ride to Milano Centrale and then train to Desenzano) and receives the major European carriers from Heathrow, including BMI, BA and Alitalia. While the Venice airports are also about 2 hours away, the traffic on surrounding roads can make them a prohibitive choice for drivers. However, you can reach Desenzano station by train via Venezia Mestre.

Guestbook for Il Pico
We had a wonderful holiday, Il Pico was such a beautiful place! Paola as well as the owners of the villa were very kind and helped us when we had some problems, like for example the strike on Milan Malpensa airport..which caused a delay on our flight, and yet we get to stay in Il Pico until that saturday 28th evening, and that helped us very much! We all fell in love with Italy and the Garda lake area, we also visited Venice, which was a great experience. Thank you very much for all of your services, we have recommended Il Pico to many people here in Finland. Milla and Marko, May 2005
I would recommend this place in a heartbeat. The views were fantastic, especially around sunset. The villa itself was lovely. And I can't say enough about how friendly, interesting and gracious the owners are. Mark, July 2005
