Wonderful living spaces are located on the ground floor. The dining room is a converted stable with a fine terracotta arch. The attractive kitchen/living area opens to a small courtyard that is perfect for alfresco breakfasts. A rose-covered arch leads into the garden, and down a few steps there is a wisteria covered pergola sheltering an extensive paved terrace furnished with garden furniture and a Tuscan barbecue. A picturesque stone path winds around the garden and takes you to the village below where there is an excellent restaurant and a great delicatessen.

Thanks to the strict external restoration code that exists today, Pietrabuona Castello has remained a virtually intact seventeenth century village with the beautiful stone houses providing comfortable homes for their modern inhabitants.

"Casa delle Rose" has retained the traditional appeal of a village house, while being well-provided with good modern appliances. A small sitting-room, three large double bedrooms and two bathrooms are located on the three upper levels. Daytime activities mostly take place on the ground floor - or in the beautiful garden below.

Further details outdoors

Pietrabuona Castello is accessed by a winding road that leads up from the valley below, through a narrow entrance in the original walls. There are no streets in the "Castello", only a central piazza where cars are parked, and where people gather in the evenings to chat and watch their children play. Beautiful stone paths then lead to the houses in the village.

Further details

- Changes of bed linen and towels are provided weekly.

- The house and garden will be cleaned and tidied for guests who are here for more than 2 weeks.

The Tuscany region

There are many ways of holidaying in Italy - hotels, city apartments, beach apartments, villas, farm houses. These all provide unforgettable experiences - but, at the end of the day, the true heart of Italy lies in its picture postcard villages. Village houses often require more effort to access (no streets), don't have swimming pools in the garden (no space) - but they provide an ambience and a contact with people that is almost impossible to obtain in towns or in the countryside. Tuscany has its beautiful cities, Florence, Siena, Lucca - as well as many smaller centres, San Gimignano, Montecatini, Viareggio - but its villages are really its crowning glory. They have a life of their own - as well as providing perfect places for easy access to the wonders of Tuscany

Tuscany is one of the most beautiful regions in Italy. The wonderful Renaissance cities of Florence (1hour) , Lucca (30 min.), Pisa (1 hour) and Siena (2 hours) are all within easy reach. These are the great art cities of the region. However, Pietrabuona is also ideally situated for day trips to the beaches of Viareggio (1 hour), the mountain resort of Abetone for walks and skiing (1 hour), the marble quarries of Carrara (90 min.), and the spa town and golf course of Montecatini ( 30 min). The beautiful Cinque Terre region is also about 2 hours away.

There is an excellent range of Tuscan guide books available on the book shelves at "Casa delle Rose" . These deal with all aspects of sightseeing in Tuscany - from gardening to sculpture to wine-tasting! In addition to this Library , all guests are provided with a booklet entitled "Your ABC to enjoying life at Casa delle Rose". This provides detailed information on all aspects of enjoying a vacation in this part of Tuscany.

Pescia

Pescia is a busy market town conveniently situated about 10 minutes from Chiesina Uzzanese, an autostrada stop on the A11 autostrada between Florence (1 hour) and Lucca (30 mins.) Pescia is a town of about 20,000 inhabitants and is well supplied with good restaurants, excellent shopping, historic buildings, a railway station and a delightful small theatre. The town is famous for its strawberries and asparagus, and is home to one of the largest commercial flower markets in Europe. There is a regular Saturday morning street market held in the splendid Piazza Mazzini.

Pietrabuona is located about 4km north of Pescia. The village of Pietrabuona, which is located immediately below Pietrabuona Castello, has an excellent restaurant, bar, butcher, Post Office, and a delicatessen where wonderful home-cooked Italian meals can be purchased. "La Torbola", the small bar at the top end of the village has a wood-fired oven, where freshly-baked focaccia may be obtained in the mornings. For summer visitors, there is an excellent resort-style swimming pool available at the Hotel San Lorenzo, about 2 kilometres along the road from Pietrabuona to Pescia.
