About 20kms from Hikkaduwa is Galle, the most important town in the south. Declared a World Heritage site in 1998, the Dutch fort area encloses some wonderful examples of colonial architecture.
Hikkaduwa, with plenty of restaurants and shops, enjoys a lively atmosphere lacking in most of the island's beach towns. The diving season along the south coast is November to April and Hikkaduwa has the best diving schools. Nearby beaches also offer great surfing, swimming, water skiing and wind-surfing opportunities
Local attractions include a dive centre, turtle hatchery, river safari, surfing and whale watching (from Mirissa or Galle).
