La Roque Gageac is formally designated as "one of the prettiest villages in France" by the French Government, and who are we to disagree.
Stuck to the cliffs overlooking the river Dordogne the houses are built, one above the other, at interesting, odd angles in the golden stone of the region with the stunning perigordian architecture.
The village has evolved, one house at a time, over a 1000 years to have a charm and personality of it's own.
The area around the village is steeped in history; since the Vikings raided, well before the 100 years war, through the middle ages and each era has left it's mark.
There are five chateaux in the area around the village. Sarlat, which has more listed buildings per square metre than any other town in Europe is only 5 miles away. Domme, Castlenaud and Beynac are all within 3 miles so the house is in the centre of the "golden triangle" of the most interesting part of the Dordogne.
The food is world renowned and the markets have ingredients which have often been harvested that morning to provide the mouth-watering basis for anything you wish to cook.
