Umbria, called with good reason the green heart of Italy, offers the perfect blend of pleasures: artistic treasures and unspoilt countryside to explore and an array of fresh produce to enjoy (including world famous truffles). Sights within a short drive of Casa Nova include, to name but a few, Perugia (medieval buildings count as modern in a city whose architecture goes back to Etruscan times), Gubbio (where the wolf did his deal with St Francis), Montone (perfect Medieval stronghold of Braccio Fortebraccio, with views out to the once-again-wolf-haunted hills around Pietralunga), Assisi (and other places associated with the life of St Francis, such as Isola Maggiore on Trasimeno), Citta di Castello (Renaissance walled town with a good market), Cortona (famous Tuscan hill town, more recently the subject of a number of best-selling books by Frances Mayes), Sansepolcro (elegant Renaissance palaces and paintings by Piero). Our website gives a wealth of detail on what to do, where to go and where to eat in the region.
The Niccone valley is one of the most beautiful spots in Umbria, presided over by the distinctive conical shape of the local landmark mountain, Monte Acuto. The Casa Nova estate, high up on the south-facing slopes, has been organically farmed since the 1980s and is a riot of wildflowers amongst olive groves and orchards. Refer to our website to get full details of the artistic sights nearby (one of us is an Art Historian specialising in the Italian Renaissance and the house was chosen because it is ideally positioned for exploring the artistic heritage of Southern Tuscany and the Upper Tiber Valley). The views can't be adequately described - you'll just have to leaf through the many photographs on our website - but it is enough to know that they inspired Raphael, Piero della Francesca and Signorelli, amongst others.
There are two houses on the Casa Nova 30 acre estate, Casa dell'Ortolano (the Garden House) and Il Casale (the Farm House), each with their own private gardens and separate pools. The houses are entirely private from one another and neither overlooks the other, but they share access to the estate's vegetable plot and orchards (and chickens, when in residence and deigning to lay eggs). For those seeking accommodation for groups up to 25, there is the possibility of renting both houses on the Casa Nova estate. See our website for further details.
