Located just below the beautiful hilltop walled town of Cortona, La Scuderia has the charm of a country cottage while enjoying the benefits of a walk to a nearby village with bars, shops and restaurants or even into Cortona itself (uphill walking or 5 minutes by car). The cottage sits in a parklike garden with a beautiful swimming pool. The owners' house is in the grounds but they are so large there is almost total privacy and La Scuderia has its own private courtyard area. It is a great base for exploring Tuscany and Umbria with good connections to the autostradas. Lake Trasimeno is only a 15 minute drive and mainline station with direct trains to Rome and Florence is only a 10 minute drive. Siena is 35 minutes by car. Bicycles are available for guests' use.
You will think you are guests of the Italian landed gentry and that is indeed the case. The very welcoming family occupy two houses on the estate (an older couple in one and a small family in the other), however, for guests it's like having a private house and garden (the adjoining house in the photo is not used by the family). The writer Alberto Moravia spent time here and wrote his novels "Conjugal Love" and "The Indifferent Ones" (L'Amore Coniugale/Gli Indifferenti) in the owner's house and in the gardens. Another guest to stay here was the former president of France, Francois Mitterand.
The front door opens into the open plan living room and kitchen with sitting room to the fore with 2 sofas, fireplace and satellite TV. The kitchen/dining areas are behind. The kitchen has oven, cooking hobs, frideg freezer and cupboards well-stocked with utensils, crockery and cutlery. En-route to the stairs is a small bathroom (WC and washbasin).
On the upper floor are the 2 air-conditioned bedrooms and the bathroom with shower and washing machine. The master bedroom has a queen size bed and the 2nd bedroom has 2 singles that can be made up as one queen sized bed. A small child's bed is available if booked in advance. The air-conditioning is available with payment of €10/day paid to the owner on arrival.
The walled garden of 5 acres (2 hectares) has very mature hedged lawns with trees and flower beds. The large swimming pool is broadly oval and has the look of a small lake with a fountain. The pool is open from May through to September. It is about 12 metres at its longest dimension with a shallow and a deep end. There is an extensive pool terrace with good quality loungers giving on to lawns and other parkland as well as a pergola provided for shade. The whole park is walled with electrically operated gates (guests get their own electronic commander). The owners, a very pleasant local family of 4 sometimes use the pool but in practice it is usually left for the guests, they are very respectful of guests' privacy.
Please note that the owners' dogs one a German Shepherd are loose in the garden but are both very friendly.

La Scuderia is situated in the peace of its own large garden and in a village setting but there are good connections to main roads and Siena and Arezzo are a 45 minute drive each, Florence an hour by car and similar by train (the train station is nearby). Montepulciano is 30 minutes and the Val d'Orcia and Pienza a little further.

La Scuderia is situated just below the beautiful medieval walled town of Cortona in Tuscany, made famous recently by Frances Mayes book "under the Tuscan Sun" which was made into a film with same name which was shot in Cortona. Cortona is on the south-eastern edge of Tuscany on its border with Tuscany and from here the whole of Umbria and southern Tuscany can be explored. Only a short drive (10-15 minutes) is beautiful Lake Trasimeno, the largest of lake on the Italian peninsula, it has beaches and ferries to 2 of the 3 islands on the lake where there are restaurants. The village of Pergo near to La Scuderia has a good grocery store, a pizzeria and a relais restaurant. Even nearer to the house is a specialist grocery store with upmarket provisions.
