Set in the French South West, between Toulouse and Bordeaux, Lavayssière lies above a valley with stunning views over the Gascon countryside. The stunning rolling countryside of the Gers (Gascony) lies to the south and west, and is dotted with medieval bastide villages, many with fabulous restaurants, chateaux and museums.
If you can drag yourself away from the pleasures of Lavayssiere's luxury features you will find some local true delights. A mere 4 minute's drive or 20 minutes walk across the valley lies the village of Bardigues, a pretty hamlet with an exceptional restaurant with a growing reputation, the Auberge de Bardigues. This summer a small epicerie opened here (selling fresh bread and essentials). A 5-minute drive takes you to the spectacular Gallo-Roman town of Auvillar – perched above the river Garonne with commanding views of Quercy to the north. Here you will find the boulangerie, the tabac, a small supermarket and several seasonal restaurants.
The market town of Moissac is 20 minutes drive away. Its 12th century Romanesque abbey and cloisters – one of the most beautiful in France – are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Valence d'Agen – the local market town – is 15 minutes away and hosts bustling markets bursting with fresh produce and in the summer the children's favourite, a 'local' waterpark, Les Paillotes.
For the adventurous, high wires amongst the trees can be found in the forest of Montech, about 40 minutes away at Agrip Aventure.
And further afield, two hours to the south, lie the Pyrenees (hill-walking in summer, ski resorts in winter). Two hours to the west is the Atlantic coast. Discover the sophisticated seaside resort of Arcachon and the truly spectacular Dune du Pyla – the highest sand dune in Europe. Consider a day-trip to Toulouse and Bordeaux – both wonderful French cities, steeped in history and culture.
