West Somerset is a region of exceptional beauty, encompassing most of Exmoor National Park, Europe's first (andy the world's second) International Dark-Sky Reserve. Exmoor is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including Exmoor ponies, red deer and birds of prey. The Exmoor coast is made up of a string of beaches interspersed with some of the highest coastal cliffs in Britain. The entire region is criss-crossed with a network of walking paths; a wide variety of active pursuits is available to visitors.
The sea-side town of MInehead is in a sheltered valley where Exmoor gently slopes to the coast. Along the coast in both directions are some of the highest and most striking sea cliffs in Britain. Around MInehead inland lie the high open spaces, hidden valleys and scattered hamlets of Exmoor. A regular bus service connects Minehead with the outlying villages of the region. The West Somerset Steam Railway connects Minehead with Bishops Lydeard, one stop from the county town of Taunton. The South West Coast Path starts in MInehead just steps from our door and continues its 600km route around the coast to Poole in Dorset. There are many scenic walks available starting at the front steps and continuing through the town or directly up North Hill.
