The Algarve region

The East Algarve has an atmosphere of it's own. The town of Tavira is one of the marvels of the Algarve, with a relaxing atmosphere along the banks of the river Gilao and numerous small restaurants and cafes. The inner city and the upper city can easily be explored on foot as the size of Tavira is not that big. You'll find some interesting buildings, churches and museums but also nice viewpoints in the direction of the Ria Formosa. With a short or longer inexpensive ferry trip the beaches on the Atlantic side of the Ria Formosa can be reached. Along the Ria some smaller fishing villages like Santa Luzia, Cabanas, Fuseta can be reached for terraces, restaurants and viewing the boats. Cacelha Vella offer a nice viewpoint over the Ria and the beachline. Part of the Ria Formosa is a marine reserve. Train enthusiast can board the coastal train line to e.g. Faro or to the Spanish border at V.R.S. Antonio.

The area caters for all profiles of visitors. Nature lovers find a splendid marine reserve. With your push bike you can explore the shores of the nature reserve and the coast. Walkers and cyclists can have a go at the hills near Tavira. Kite surfers find their paradise on the eastern Cabañas beach. During the summer months in Tavira a 'summer of Tavira' is organised by the council with small markets and musical performances in the evenings.
