Being just a short stroll from the bungalow, the Village of Villereal is your first call. It is one of the most beautiful, breathtaking villages in France. It offers supermarkets and brasseries as well as local produce shops and every Monday they hold a night market with live music, a must during your stay.
Villereal is located right in the North of the department of Lot-et-Garonne, on the border with the Dordogne department. With its population of approx. 1300 inhabitants, it is the main town in a canton of 13 villages – approx. 3500 inhabitants altogether.
In this beautiful hilly part of the Haut Agenais region, Villeréal enjoys a favoured position in the valley of the river Dropt, along the banks of which can be found other bastides : English bastides such as Beaumont or Monpazier on the right bank while French ones like Castillonnes or Villereal are on the left.
The "Bastide" towns of southwest France are a growing tourist attraction, and comprise one of the largest collections of well-preserved mediaeval townscapes to be found anywhere in Europe.
Obviously, the built environment of the more important bastides has been significantly modified since mediaeval times, but in many of the more rurally sited bastides, the layout of streets and buildings has remained virtually unchanged for over six centuries.
There are said to be some 500-700 bastides in France, depending on how wide the definition is extended. Most of these are in the southwest, and the majority of them were built in the two centuries from 1200 to 1400.
