The Western Heights were built in 1779 to augment the fortifications offered by the outdated Medieval castle. It started life as extensive earthwork batteries and grew into two massive forts, miles of dry ditches and a hospital and a barracks. They remained in use until after the Second World War. Much of the complex was destroyed but the two forts and the ditches, and the Grand Shaft staircase were restored and opened to the public.
