Fifteen minutes drive from Juan Dolio is the town of San Pedro de Macorís, with several supermarkets and all kind of specialized shops. Wealthy Cuban refugees established huge sugar industries by the 19th century and manned them with cocolos, English-speaking West Indians whose unique culture and music still characterize the town. San Pedro de Macorís was first on the island to have a baseball team and baseball players continue to be its pride. More than 70 of the best Major League Baseball players have come from San Pedro de Macorís. Less than an hour's drive from Juan Dolio is the Cave of Marvels, a magical site with stalactites, stalagmites and several Taíno (the original habitants of the island) pictographs. You may also drive to the village of Bayahibe from where you can take a boat to the breathtaking, unspoilt beaches of the Saona Island National Park.
The gated community and golf course of Gauvaberry is a quite and green oasis, close to the beaches and restaurants of Juan Dolio and other towns and beaches, like La Romana and Bayahibe. The bustling life of Santo Domingo is just forty-five minutes drive away.
The Gary Player designed golf course is challenging and varied. After a round of golf, bathing by the club house on the beach, or a ride on horseback or bicycle, you may relax with a drink in the jacuzzi, enjoying the sight of the setting sun and maybe round up the day with an evening meal at one of the excellent sea food restaurant along the white sand beaches of Juan Dolio.
