The canton of Valais is home to the fabulous 4 Valleys, Switzerland's best known ski domain which is in one of the most spectacular mountain ranges of the Swiss Alps. The region enjoys a reputation as one of the leading high-level winter ski areas of Europe and parts of the local, scenic Herens Valley have been designated a conservation area for their outstanding natural beauty.
Below the village of Les Collons in the Rhone Valley stands the historic town of Sion, well worth a visit to explore its twin fortress castles, its bustling Friday market and the museums, restaurants and lively pavement cafes. In winter and in summer there are a wealth of activities in this area:- for snow sports, from skiing and snowboarding to langlauf cross-country, snow shoe walking "en raquettes", tobogganing, paragliding, heli-skiing, ice skating and huskey dog sleigh rides. In summer, favourite activities include walking along the "bisses" (ancient irrigation channels forged through the mountain-side) or walking along marked mountain trails (over 300 km of marked paths); mountain biking with numerous well-marked tracks; taking the gondola to stroll along the banks of the highest dam in Europe at Dixence; marvelling at the weird rock formations of the Pyramides d'Euseigne; taking a boat trip on the underground lake at St Leonard; visiting quaint chocolate-box villages; wine tasting at local vineyards; relaxing in hot, thermal springs; playing golf with a choice of several top notch courses, horse riding, tennis, fishing, swimming in lakes and plenty more besides..
There are plenty of cultural activities to choose from too:- for example festivals such as the famous Montreux Jazz Festival and the international Paleo Pop Festival in Nyon in July, the Vinea Wine Festival of Sierre in September plus numerous musical events. At Martigny the Fondation Gianadda plays host to a variety of world-class art exhibitions and its St Bernard Dog Musuem is a delight. Unique local events take place in the region in early summer in the form of "cow-fighting" where the Queen of the Herds is crowned and for families with kids they will enjoy the rustic village playground and further afield, the Adventure Forest at Verrcorin, Happyland Theme Park and Parc Aventure Water Park at Aigle.
Chalet Etoile Polaire is situated in the small mountain village of Les Collons which links into the eastern sector of the 4 Valley ski circuit. The main part of the village stands at 1800 metres so from December through to April snow is guaranteed and there is always more than enough to ski back down to the chalet at the end of the day. The village itself is a cosmopolitan mix of local folk and second-home owners. All the amenities such as shops, supermarket, ski hire, bank ATM plus restaurants and small bars are right on your doorstep. Better still in winter, a fast quad chairlift is just a couple of minutes' walk away and if you don't fancy the walk, there's a ski bus stop right opposite. Although we recommend having a car here, it is not strictly necessary, as everything you need in winter is on hand.
The 4 Valleys is Switzerland's most extensive ski area and it encompasses over 400 kilometres of ski slopes and 99 lifts with access to Verbier just a couple of hours ski away. There are opportunities for skiers and snow boarders of all abilities. The more advanced will relish the challenges of the long, black Etherolla run and the moguls fields and off-piste around the Mont Fort glacier; intermediates will enjoy the long, cruising runs at Veysonnaz, including the famous World Cup Piste de l'Ours and beginners will gain confidence on the sunny, open slopes above the village. The snowboard Park at Thyon is considered to be the best in the area with the advantage of weekly video filming sessions. Children are well catered for here as well and there's an excellent children's ski school, a snow kindergarten and a handy crèche for the tinies (from 6 months to 6 years).
To sum up, with a sophisticated lift system, fewer queues and Verbier just a couple of hours ski away, Les Collons makes the perfect base for a ski holiday without the hefty price tag!
When the snow clears, the Alps come to life as a superb holiday destination. In summer the days are long and sunny and this area benefits from a microclimate which enjoys the same hours of sunshine as the South of France. Crystal-clear alpine air, peace and tranquillity and outstandingly, beautiful, natural scenery.....what better environment to relax and revitalise. Les Collons make an excellent starting point for a multitude of walking, hiking and mountain biking trails. Nearby you'll find tennis, horse-riding, swimming, several first- class golf courses, thermal springs, vineyards for wine tasting and plenty of other wonderful scenic and cultural attractions besides.
So you have it - a wonderful spot for a summer holiday with a difference!
