Wander through the narrow medieval streets and alleyways of Santa Vittoria in Matenano, moments from the 13th century clock tower at the gateway to town, and you will find this welcoming cottage. Carceri Vecchie is not just the name of this pretty cobbled ally, it's also the site of this historic town's ancient prison and means just that. Today the house sits amongst historic palazzos and gardens, but the dungeons still exist two storeys down underneath the cobbles where today happily our neighbour stores wine and olive oil under the cool dark vaults and archways.
Relax amongst the lemon trees and vines on the sunny roof terrace or enjoy a lunch in the shade of the private courtyard. Completely renovated in 2013 the cottage has all the modern comforts of home, yet just footsteps from the award winning restaurants, shops and ice cream of this celebrated hill town.
Further afield, you are around 30mins away from the blue flag beaches of the Adriatic Riviera, the Monti Sibillini National Park and the renaissance splendour of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo and countless other hill towns that dot this dramatic landscape.

Like neighbouring Tuscany and Umbria, Le Marche shares the essence of 'la bella vita'. Its rich heritage of art, culture, in food and wine, in architecture and landscapes are the equal of any in what is often described as the most beautiful country on Earth. What makes this region truly special is that it is still waiting to be discovered.
Explore for yourself the ancient hill top towns, olive groves and vineyards, beaches and mountains, the museums and renaissance churches, and leave the stresses of mass tourism behind. This is a region for those who love the best of Italy, from the morning cappuccino in the sleepy piazza, or the evening "passeggiata" stroll around town, ice cream in hand, to the exceptional hospitality and warmth of the welcome in elegant restaurant and humble trattoria alike.
Le Marche is well served by airports in Ancona, Pescara and Perugia with Ryanair, and via train to Rome and by a new Ancona-Milan high speed service.
Santa Vittoria in Matenano sits atop its own hill, between the Monti Sibillini National Park, the blue flag beaches of the Adriatic Riviera, and the main cultural and artistic centres of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo. All are reachable within around 30-40minutes. It is the ideal spot to explore and enjoy this remarkably diverse and rich landscape. Look out from the cobbled streets towards the high mountains, the numerous other medieval villages and churches that dot this landscape or turn around to see the blue waters of the Adriatic over the rolling hills and fields.
Whether you want to sunbathe and enjoy spaghetti alle vongole (clams) in the family friendly seaside town of Pedaso or hike and tuck into a plate of lenticche con salsiccia ( sausages and lentils) in the spectacular mountain vllage of Castelluccio it's all a short drive away. Alternatively head to the elegance of Ascoli Piceno, the famous Piazza del Popolo is said to be the most beautiful in Italy. Sit and enjoy an apertivo at the art deco Caffe Meletti and decide for yourself.
Closer to home the many sleepy hill top vlllages offer endless possibilities to explore, each with its own charms and special views of mountains and sea.
