Serralongue is a pretty mountain village in Haut Vallespir, Pyrenees Orientales in Languedoc, South of France. Within an hour's drive of the Mediterranean and very close to the Spanish border, the region benefits from a very favourable climate; three hundred days of sunshine in an average year making it the second sunniest, after Corsica, in the whole of France. Perpignan, the principal city in French Catalunya, is only an hour's drive away and the region is well served by the budget airlines: Girona in Spain and Perpignan airports are both one and a half hour's drive and Carcassonne and Beziers are only half an hour further.
Tucked away in chestnut forest but just 10 minutes stroll from the village is our gite at Can Cassou. It has a cosy lounge with TV, DVD and stereo. A fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, oven and everything you are likely to need. Adjacent is the sleeping accommodation, which consists of two bedrooms, one double and one twin and a shower room with wash basin and toilet. Outside you have a large private garden with comfortable chairs and a barbecue. In the summer months we erect a 7 metre pool where you can enjoy refreshing dip or simply cool off after sunbathing..

Serralongue is in Haut Vallespir, which is truly an area of outstanding beauty with its mountains, chestnut forests and trout rivers. There is an incredible range of wildlife including deer, wild boar, amphibians as well as a huge variety of birds and insects. This is the most southerly part of France; from the next village, Lamanere, it is only a short walk into Spain. The weather is fantastic - lots of sun, blue skies and comfortable temperatures through most of the year - it is frequently possible to dine al fresco even at Christmas. The location is conveniently situated to access the coastal resorts of the French Mediterranean and the Costa Brava as well as skiing in the season. There are many beautiful towns and villages within a short drive with excellent restaurants and interesting shops such as Prats de Mollo and Ceret, famous for its cherries and museum of modern art. You can buy figs, peaches, apricots, cherries and melons from roadside stalls at very reasonable prices and, of course, the wine from this region, which you can buy direct from the vineyards, is second to none.
There is much to do here; pony trekking through the forest for a couple of hours or an all day trip with your picnic to the magnificent Tours de Cabrenys that have stood guard over Serralongue for centuries, with incredible views of both France and Spain. in the neighbouring village of St. Laurent de Cerdans there is Falgos, the magnificent golf club and spa with its spectacular mountain scenery. Walking here is wonderful, for the more adventurous there are a number of challenging mountain trails or pretty forest walks for those who prefer to stroll. There are too many cultural events to mention but if you look at Anglophone Direct, an website in English that specialises in the Pyrenees Orientales, there is a regularly updated list of just about everything going on here.
