Somerset boasts a variety of scenery, from the caves of Cheddar Gorge to the long sandy beaches of Weston super Mare, the dramatic, rocky Exmoor National Park and historic towns and cities such as Bath, which attracts over a million visitors a year.
The coastline offers mile upon mile of flat sandy beaches, with a few offshore islands, and the second highest tidal rise in the world. The Quantocks, Mendips and Blackdown hills are all designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the world famous wetlands of the Somerset Levels were beneath the sea until drained by monks of Glastonbury Abbey.
You'll find sleepy villages with welcoming village pubs, delicious cream teas, local cheddar cheese and pints of local cider. The Georgian splendour of Bath, the medieval city of Wells and the historic seaport of Bristol are not far away from Weston super Mare and well worth a day trip.
For those who like to be active, there are opportunities for coastal walks, climbing, cycling, golfing, horse riding, mountain biking, caving, quad biking, sailing, sand yachting and lots more in the local area.
Weston super Mare is a traditional English seaside resort with an extensive sandy beach backed by a long, flat promenade and gardens. It's perfect for a stroll to admire the views across the Bristol Channel to South Wales and Brean Down.
The 19th century saw Weston super Mare grow from a tiny village of about 100 inhabitants, to a thriving Victorian seaside resort of nearly 20,000 people. One hundred years later it has a population of almost 70,000. There are many local attractions, including the world famous Grand Pier, Sea Aquarium, beach donkeys, helicopter museum, the annual beach sculptures and Weston beach race. Weston has a thriving theatre, Winter Gardens Pavilion, and a good range of shops in the indoor shopping centre.
Sea Drift is a perfect base for discovering Somerset, including Cheddar Gorge, Caves and the Cheese Factory, Wookey Hole, Longleat Safari Park, Brean Leisure Park, Glastonbury Tor, Wells Cathedral, Bath, the Mendip Hills, Somerset Levels and Moors.
