The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region

Sun,sea and sand or relax by the pool -

The Charente-Maritime is the 2nd hottest part of France after the South. Between the vineyards of Bordeaux & the Loire Valley its mild climate makes it attractive from early spring to late autumn. Within half a days drive (5 hrs) of the northern ports this area has excellent road connections via the A10 motorway as well as the TGV at Saintes and air access via La Rochelle or Bordeaux

300 miles of coastline plus the shallow, child friendly estuary beaches of the Gironde , backed by fragrant pine forests and lively resorts. La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Oléron, Aix and Ré provide year round interest. Inland, there are vast wooded valleys, Poitou fens and Marais Poitevin with tranquil canals (Venice Vert), the valley of Vienne and Charente rivers & of course the vineyards at Bordeaux and Cognac.

Talmont , one of the prettiest villages in the region lies perched on a nearby coastal promentary while Pons (situated on one of the traditional pilgimage routes from Northern Europe to Compostello) has an ancient citadel as its centre piece with a beautiful river walk and pedal boat rides at the base of the old city walls.

Known for its wine, Charentaise melon, fruits and vegetables you are unsurprisingly never short of a good restaurant. Seafood is plentiful given the proximity to both the sea and the Gironde. The region is well known for its fresh Oysters and Mussels - a trip to Tremblade and the oyster centre is within easy reach.

Cozes

St Andre de Lidon (2 min drive or a cycle) has a local boulangerie, bar and general store as well as tennis courts and the local attraction of Chateau D'Eau gardens. Cozes (5 min drive) has a 12c Church and 14c covered market which operates every week with special night time markets, arts and music festivals in the summer plus all the amenities you need (banks, boulangerie, hairdressers, post office, supermarket, garage etc). Gemozac also has a very large supermarket.

Every kind of activity imaginable is available in the area from go-ape style climbing in the trees, fishing, golf, water sports, tennis, cycling and horse riding plus the Velo Rail at Cozes, an incredible Zoo at Palmyre, ten pin bowling, pool, caves and play centre with harborside restaurants and safe beaches at Meschers, a great Aquarium at La Rochelle, the Vineyards of Bordeaux, spririts of Cognac and Roman ruins at Saintes and Fa (15 minutes).

St Andre'sbar has a small restaurant while Cozes has a Vietnamese with take away and If you like to eat out al fresco the nearby fishing port of Meschers is ideal. Royan has too many sea front restaurants to mention and a permanent fun fair all summer.

Cycle paths wide enough for vehicles lead directly from the rear garden through the cool shady woods of oak and pine toward either Cozes or St Andre. The vineyard of Courpron lies within 5 minutes cycle and is recommended for a visit. All guests receive a welcome guide providing instructions on the house and local area.
