In Short: Separated from the historic centre by the River Arno, before the unification of Italy the Sant'Antonio district was joined with neighbouring San Martino in an area called Chizinca. Today it occupies the part of Santa Maria found south of the Arno and is characterised by the majestic buildings found in the Lungarno area.
Highlights: Along the banks of the river, on the Lungarno Sidney Sonnino, there are a number of buildings of historical and architectural interest, including the Palazzo Gambacorti, home of Pisa's town council since 1689 and famous for its interior courtyard that dates from the medieval period. Also important is the Santa Maria della Spina Church, its name due to having been home to a thorn from Christ's crown until 1333.
Getting around: The area is well-connected thanks to the high-speed LAM buses (red and green lines) and the regular urban buses (lines 2 and 4).
Why stay: Ideal for those looking for comfort without having to sacrifice on proximity to everything the historic centre has to offer.
