In Short: quiet, residential neighbourhood at the foot of Montjuïc and just south of Plaça Espanya.
Highlights: a short walk to the Magic Fountain, relaxing in the shade of the Laribal Gardens, allioli and house wine at La Tomaquera restaurant.
Getting around: line 3 of the metro on Paral•lel Avenue, funicular from Paral•lel metro station to the Parc de Montjuïc, about 15 minutes' walk to the Ramblas.
Why stay: still fairly central without being chaotic, authentically Catalan feel, peaceful at night, great transport links, lots of local amenities (including well-known restaurants and bars), quick access to Montjuïc and nightlife of the Raval.
Description: Nestled next to Montjuïc and stretching down from the Plaça de Espanya is the sliver of a district that is Poble Sec. The strong sense of community in this barrio is what gives it its appeal. Local colour is everywhere and residents of Poble Sec can often be seen having a sociable drink on Carrer Blai, which is a hotspot come nightfall, or dancing the sardana in one of the squares. There are plenty of small shops, bars, restaurants and cafes with an authentic feel to them. While Poble Sec might not have any of the major sights in Barcelona, it does have excellent transport links with the rest of the city and is the perfect laid-back evening retreat after a hard days sightseeing. Getting there is also a breeze, as the area lies beside Plaça de Espanya is a major metro and rail station with direct connections to El Prat airport.
