The East Flanders region

Ghent is situated in the heart of East Flanders. The city is therefore the perfect base for exploring its verdant surroundings. The five adjoining areas – Lys Valley, Meetjesland, Waasland, Scheldeland and the Flemish Ardennes – each have their own specific characteristics and count numerous museums, monuments, churches, gardens and beguinages among their many attractions.

The river Lys winds its way through the picturesque landscape to the west of Ghent (the Lys Valley). Internationally renowned painters here found the peace and inspiration they needed to create some of their finest works.

Ghent

Why Ghent?

Because Lonely Planet has called our city “Europe's best kept secret” and a must see destination for 2011.

Because National Geographic Traveler Magazine has listed this city as the most authentic historic city in the world and full of life.

Because you must witness with your own eyes what Napoleon and the mysterious thief of 'The Just Judges' panel already knew: The Mystic Lamb really is key to European art history.

Because the city comes to life again after sunset.

And of course because you like to get off the beaten track!

...that's why!!
