The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Belvès has origins dating back to before the middle ages, is situated in the Périgord Noir region of the Dordogne. Located on a rocky spur at the edge of the Bessède forest, with commanding views overlooking the Nauze valley, It is listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France.

The town's history is still visible in numerous places in the town and the surrounding countryside. Beneath the central square in the Place D'Armes with its 500 year-old pillars (and the site of a weekly Saturday morning market), you can get a glimpse of life in the middle ages in the 'troglodyte caves' in the medieval defence ditch that surrounded the fortified Castrum.

But Belvès today is also a thriving country town with a resident population of around 1,400 people and a vibrant local culture. The Dordogne's Valley is 7 km away with many castles (Beynac, les Milandes, Castelneau, the Marqueyssac Gardens), its caves and its prehistoric sites There is no shortage of places to eat and things to do. You can get more information from the Belvès Tourist Office web site.

Belves

There is a local train station on the Périgueux - Agen line and the apartments are about a kilometre from the station (up hill, a strenuous walk).

There is a local taxi service that has to be booked in advance (let us know if you want contact details).

However, it is recommend that you hire a car for getting around the region if you want to experience all that it has to offer.
