Especially for walkers and country-lovers wanting to get away from it all and experience the real Greece as it used to be, this charming character cottage in the heart of a traditional Greek village is possibly the most romantic place you'll ever stay. The bedroom, tucked under the eaves and surrounded by the gentle grey foliage of the olive trees, is like sleeping in a tree house, and in spring the night air is filled with the sound of nightingales. Goat bells tinkle on the hillside, and from the patio you look over a sparkling sea, where dolphins regularly come and play.
The village of Ano Gatzea is the only stop on the Pelion Heritage railway and the little steam train trundles up the narrow gauge line in the summer months, stopping for walkers, mountain bikers and sheep, all of whom use the line as well.
Cobbled paths lead down through the olive groves to the beach (20 minutes walk) where mountain springs bubble up through the sand. The Pagasitic Gulf, almost entirely surrounded by land is more like a lake than a sea and remains warm enough to swim in year round. In summer, it is tepid, in winter, cool but not cold and there is something truly magical swimming about looking up at the high snow covered mountains that enclose this undiscovered part of Greece. After your swim, come back to your cozy cottage with a wood-burning stove to keep your toasty warm.
