Gallipoli is an amazing and beautiful city in the province Lecce in Salento.
The name originate from the Greek (Kalé pólis) and means “beautiful city”. And really it is the beauty and the character which gives this place such a singular, extraordinary and charming touch.
Gallipoli fascinates because of many naturalized treasures and resources; certainly of the architecture and the history. Little ledge rocks at the seaside, clean and romantic beautiful beaches, important and historic buildings: this is Gallipoli – the gem of the Ionic Sea!
Gallipoli, located at the east coast, has a very amazing and interesting ground structure of a two-parted city: the historic city (Centro Storico) is located on a small island and connected with the mainland by bridge. The new town on the mainland is called “borgo”.
Many small alleys with shops, craftsmen and different trattorias with salenic specialties and fish of the Ionic Sea are extended a welcome to visitors from all over the world!
To visit are the cathedral Sant' Agata and the castle Castello Angioino. On a walk along the wall of the historical centre you can admire the coast of Gallipoli and the island Sant Andrea with lighthouse.
The most famous beaches are Baia Verde and Riva Bella.
In Baia Verde are many modern lidos; this beach is mainly visited by young people in the afternoon.
Also in Riva Bella are many modern lidos; this beach is mainly visited by families.
There are a lot of different eventualities to have a nice evening in Gallipoli: expositions and public festivals, music concerts and ethnic events. Today, the traditional salentic music is popular way beyond frontier.
Many bars, shops and restaurants are located in the street Corso Roma; at the Lungomare is a small playground.
In the city Lecce (50 km) expect the visitors a historical city with many baroque churches – the most famous is the church Santa Croce – the Roman amphitheatre and the Piazza Sant' Oranzo. Many bars and restaurants invite to have a nice evening in a relaxed atmosphere with typical salentic meals.
Further sight-seeing among others are the cities Leuca, Tranto and Taranto.
