The Tel Aviv District

Rehovot

Known the world-over for its famed Weizmann Institute and the cutting edge scientific research and discoveries that emanate from its walls, the city of Rehovot has many facets. Located 20 km south of Tel Aviv, the city is also known for citrus groves and many cultural institutions.

A group of immigrants from Poland, not wanting to be under the patronage of Baron de Rothschild, founded Rehovot in 1890 and were joined by new immigrants from Yemen sixteen years later, an unusual brew for community development back in those days. The town became a city and reached over 120,000 people by the time it celebrated its 100th birthday; the size of the town had doubled by then, due, in great part to the establishment of Hebrew University's Department of Agriculture at the research station in Rehovot which had been set up in 1932. In 1934 Chaim Weizmann, later to become the first president of the State of Israel, built the Sieff Institute, later renamed The Weizmann Institute of Science. Both Weizmann and his wife are buried on the grounds of the institute.
