Lanzarote is situated just 79 miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands and the perfect year round destination due to its mild, dry climate, minimal rainfall and cool sea breeze.
It is a fascinating island of unusual beauty and vivid contrasts that has a character all of its own. Blue skies and endless sunshine are in abundance making it an ideal location for young and old alike. The island offers a wide range of villages, markets, shopping centres, while sun worshippers can enjoy long, wide beaches with excellent water sport facilities. Superb restaurants and bars can also be found throughout the island and enhance the relaxed, tranquil atmosphere.
Travel around the island is simple using public transport, car hire or taxi service. A visit to the lunar landscape of the Timanfaya National Park, home to Fire Mountain, should not be missed, while the natural caverns at Jameos del Agua, with its breathtaking views is also well worth a visit. The Cesar Manrique Foundation provides art lovers with an insight into the raison d'etre behind Lanzarote's unique architecture.
Puerto del Carmen is the longest established resort on the island. Nestled on the coast in the southern central part of the island, it is only a 10 minute drive from Arrecife Airport and is a convenient place from which to explore Lanzarote's tourist and cultural attractions.
Like many places in Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen, was originally a small fishing village, and the old harbour is still a delightful place to visit, boosting some excellent seafood restaurants. Although the resort has grown over the last 20 years - it now stretches along the whole 6 kilometres of golden sandy beaches - the town has been saved from the high-rise buildings that blight so many other destinations due to the strict planning restrictions.
Water sports and diving schools are in abundance along this 'Blue Flag' rated beach. While other facilities offer squash, tennis, horse-riding and golf. The 18-hole Par 72 course was Lanzarote's first golf course and lies at the foot of an old volcano set in a landscape of volcanic lava, cacti and palm trees.
