The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The Aude is the "other south of France". It's one of the departments in Languedoc-Roussillon. Other than the Mediterranean beaches and resorts it's a relatively undiscovered vacation destination.

You'll be hard pressed to find tee shirts and ball caps except in the coastal tourist towns and in La Cite in Carcassonne.

The Aude stretches from the Mediterranean in the east to Castelnaudary in the west, the Montagne Noire in the north and the Pyrénées in the south.

Carcassonne is the capital and the other major centres are Narbonne and Limoux.

With a population of about 310,000 the Aude represents .5% of the population of France and 14.1% of the population of Languedoc.

Carcassonne

Les Gascous is on the border of Aude and Ariege, offering a tranquil hill top retreat with stunning views of the Sabarat Mountains and Montse'ger on a clear day.

Mirepoix is in the Ariege department of the Midi-Pyrenees near the border with the Languedoc-Roussillon and between Carcassonne and Foix. It is a beautiful medieval bastide town and Mirepoix should not be missed if you are in this area.

Mirepoix started life on the other side of the River Hers but following a terrible flood in 1209 which wiped out many of the villages in the area the town was rebuilt on the opposite bank. Mirepoix suffered during the Hundred Years War but then became an important textile centre in the 15th century.
