There is no shortage of delicious red wines too, not to mention the local cuisine, duck fillet, confit and cassoulet are all famous in this region.
Summers are hot , reaching 40 degrees and the sun shines pretty much all year round. The countryside and architecture is original and beautiful, with the Pyrenees and Spanish border to the south, the mediterranean coast to the East and Vineyards all around. The constant sunshine ensures great tasting wines.
The World Heritage site of Carcassonne is visited all year round and there are many other excellent historical sites, Castles and Abbeys which are well worth a visit.
Limoux is a bustling market town of some 10,000 inhabitants. The architecture is medieval and the narrow roads of the original town wind through the inside of some of the original fortified walls of the town.
The hub of the town is the central square, packed with bars, restauraunts and shops. This square is the venue for the night and day markets, wine tasting events, regular live music shows, festivals and dances, not to mention the famous carnival that takes place through the winter months.
The Aude river goes straight through the town and fisherman are seen regularly wading in its shallow waters.
Further up river, within easy walking distance of the town, you can try you hand at Kayaking, or swim in the local open air pool, with sunbeds and views of the mountains and river.
Walking and mountain biking are popular activities in the area and there are many bike lanes on the roads and off road tracks, where you can choose your route dependent upon your energy level. The tour de France routes are right here in the doorstep.
Painting lessons can be booked in the town, horse riding and guided mountain walking in the Pyrenees.
Limoux also benefits from a single track railway that takes you into Carcassonne for only 1 Euro, or further into the mountains stopping at villages on the route for the same price. Bikes and pets travel free.
