Bequia is an unspoilt jewel in the Caribbean. The most northerly of the St Vincent Grenadines it is a one hour ferry ride from Kingstown , St Vincent and can be accessed directly by air from Barbados. The population is approximately 6000 and is comprised of about 1000 foriegners, some of whom live year round in Bequia, the balance are descendents of Scottish and Portugeuse whalers and a mixed local community. The island is the perfect size- large enough to have excellent facilities, particularly dining and vacation activities, but small enough not to have suffered the over development of larger Caribbean countries. Most people have a nickname ( you will probably get one too after a week or so on the island). There is a strong sense of community and visitors are welcomed and treated as "family" Serious crime is very rare and the police are on top of their job. The population is by and large Christian and most denominations are repesented. Tourism, and related construction, is the major economic activity with emphasis placed on villa rentals, small boutique hotels , guest houses and appartments. This is serviced by a wide range of restaurants, bars, supermarkets and shops. Services including sailing and fishing charters, diving and simply relaxing on the many fine beaches . Restaurant menus concentrate heavily on local produce of which lobster, fish and conch(lambie) are the staples, usually served with breadfruit or rice.
Belmont is an an elevated area on the south side of Admiralty Bay, close to the main village of Port Elisabeth- known locally as "harbour"- Kingstown, St Vincent is "town". Ylang Ylang is about 150 feet above sea level and a five minute walk to sea and the boardwalk into harbour, alongside which are restaurants, bars and hotels. Lower bay and Princess Margaret bay are both within a mile and have fine white sand and crystal clear water. Although rental cars, scooters and bicycles are available the local taxis are safe and reliable and the common method of transport is the"dollar van", a minibus running on a fixed route which will stop on demand- the nearest route to Ylang Ylang is 50 yards away- and most guests do not rent a vehicle..
