The Sicily region

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean.

Inhabited since ancient times of prehistory, is surrounded by three seas: the Tyrrhenian, the Ionian Sea and the Central Mediterranean. It has the shape of a triangle (and this was called Trinacria).

Crossroads of several civilizations, the succession to the domination of the island, inherited by each of them a piece of the puzzle that makes up the typical character of the people, as well as extraordinary evidence of a cultural and artistic heritage rarely equaled in the world. A mild climate, natural surroundings with beautiful islands and islets, some of the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean, with pristine seabed, active volcanoes, mountains, plains and cities from the Baroque face fascinating and intriguing, make Sicily one of the most popular tourist destinations original of the Mediterranean and the world.

The island has a mainly mountainous and hilly, flat areas, in fact, there are only along the coasts and in the Plain of Catania. In this zone is Mount Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, 3350 meters high, in constant activity and observation. The volcanic activity in the region is known to be widespread among the areas where it is possible to observe this activity, the island of Ustica and the Aeolian archipelago.

Sicily is surrounded to the north dall'arcipelago Aeolian or Lipari Islands and the island of Ustica, the Egadi group from the west to the south of the island of Pantelleria and the Pelagie Islands: islands are all small to medium constituting a varied and exceptional archaeological, geological, environmental, scenic and unique opportunities for sea holidays.

Bridge crossing between Europe and Africa, is only 140 km from the latter, while just 3 km separate it from Calabria.

The coastal areas of Sicily have various aspects: sand dunes, rock, rocks of lava material.

Catania

Situated on the east coast of Sicily, about 16 km from Catania, Acireale is one of the most remarkable cities of the island.

Overlooking the waters of the Ionian Sea and dominated behind Etna, situated between the gray lava stone and green citrus trees, vines, olive trees and several varieties of fruit trees, in addition to the typical Mediterranean vegetation. The presence of many types of crops is correlated with aspects of local climate Sicilian and geo-lithological characters, such as exposure mainly to the east and south-east of the territory. The Mediterranean climate has a sufficient amount of rainfall and winds generally from the east.

The morphology of the coastal strip of Acireale alternating different types of costs including rock outcrops, cliffs overhanging rocks and large blocks.

The historical, economic and commercial center of Acireale was already known to the Romans by the presence of water sources sulfur, sodium chloride and radioactive gave her fame as a spa town. Acireale also also has three streams: one to the north called phage that defines the common acese with that of Giarre and the other in the southern part of the town called Platani and the last called Pozzillo through the homonymous village.

The urbanization of the territory acese was impassable along the ridge or lava front (the Timpa), because of its high altitude, but the area has not been abandoned but valued, protected and preserved as a nature reserve (14/3/1984 ), with its characteristic caves and caverns.

The Timpa is in fact subject to environmental protection for its natural values, scenic and lookout. The construction of the highway 114 is remembered as the most important urban intervention, in that it allowed a coastal link between Catania and Messina, dividing the city center from fractions marinate. Other channels of communication with neighboring countries are the railway, motorway and a dense network of urban and suburban roads.
