The North East of Brazil is the main “sun and beach” destination in the country. This is not surprising considering the near perfect climate and the numerous coconut-tree lined semi-virgin beaches along its beautiful coastline. The weather in the northeast is the best in the entire country, with a yearly average temperature of 27oC, and is stable and sunny virtually all year around; whilst the scenery and beaches are quite simply breathtaking in their natural beauty! The northeast of Brazil is reported, by NASA, as having the second cleanest air in the world, after Antarctica; so you can rest assured that whilst you are bathing in the glorious Brazilian sun, you will indeed be breathing in some of the best air in the world!
At the heart of the North East of Brazil is Bahia and its capital Salvador, which is known as Brazil's capital of happiness due to its easygoing population and countless popular outdoor parties, including its street carnival. Carnival, meaning farewell to the flesh, takes place during February or March. It is a seasonal celebration that combines elements of street parties, parades, masquerade, singing and dancing. Brazil Carnival is rich in vibrant music, exotic costumes and dancing, not to mention the indulgence in eating, drinking and merrymaking. Although the Rio de Janeiro Carnival is known worldwide for the elaborate parades staged by the city's major samba schools, the Salvador Carnival is by far the biggest street party in the world, with every year around 2 million people participating in the parades. Living up to its name 'city of joy'.
Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, from 1549 to 1763, and as such has seen the amalgamation of Amerindian, African and European cultures. The architectural marvels of Salvador which ought to be visited are the Cathedral of Salvador, which is a specimen of the most intricate form of Mannerist style of architecture and decoration, the Church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim, which is the most sacrosanct church in Salvador with its neoclassical decorations, and the Church of Sao Francisco, which is one of the most magnificent churches in Brazil, with its extensive baroque decoration. Other attractions are the Elevador Lacerda, which is an elevator made in the 19th century that bridges the upper and the lower city, and the Mercado Modelo, an extensive market, housed in a cylindrical building, for arts and crafts. You can't visit Salvador without spending time in Pelourinho, the old historic center. Centered around the old slave auction, Pelourinho is the old city, within the city, of colorful colonial buildings, cobblestoned streets and a sense of history clustered around the Largo do Pelourinho, which was named a world cultural centre by UNESCO. In Pelourinho you can find the museum dedicated to the Brazilian author Jorge Armado, whose books have been translated around the world.

The hotels provide direct access to the beach. There are many other beautiful beaches, ranging from 10-60 minutes drive away; including those at Porto de Sauipe, Conde, Poças, Imbassai, Praia do Forte and Guarajuba. The meeting of the river with the sea at Porto do Sauipe, Imbassai and further north at Conde/Poças are of considerable natural beauty. A number of bars operate directly on these beaches, where you can get drinks and lunch (usually consisting of locally caught sea food).
