The Sicily region

Sicily is a region of Southern Italy and in addition to being the southernmost region of Italy is also the largest island in the country. It is bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north, to the east by the Ionian Sea, the Sea of Sicily in the south. Its provinces are Palermo (regional capital), Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Ragusa, Siracusa and Trapani. The highest point of the island is an active volcano Mount Etna is located in the northeast of the island. They are part of Sicily some islands and archipelagos such as the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi Islands, the Pelagie, Pantelleria and Ustica. The old name for this region was Trinakria derives from three points, such as those that delimit the region. The emblem of Sicily is the head of Medusa which are detached three legs that run, the symbol of the three forms taken by the sun (god of spring, summer and winter), the island's current name is probably derived from "fertile" but did not replace the old symbol with Medusa. The land of Sicily has been visited over the centuries by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Normans. Each of these civilizations left their mark on the culture, traditions and art of this beautiful region. They find themselves in fact Greek temples, Roman mosaics, Arab buildings, structures reminiscent of Norman and testify to the historical and cultural background of Sicily.

Trapani

With an area of ??almost 2,500 square kilometers, distributed among 24 municipalities, with a population of about 500,000 inhabitants, the province of Trapani occupies the extreme western part of the island, between the Gulf of Castellammare and the lower reaches of Belice, border with the provinces of Palermo and Agrigento. Marsala is located in Cape Boeo or Lilybaeum, one of the three extremes of Sicily: the most western. The composition of the region is quite varied: a diagonal drawn from the north-west to south-east, the most mountainous part is the north-east. In the inner area stand relieves some of modest height, as the mountains Sparagio (1,110 m), Inici (1,000 m), Pizzo of Niviere (1,042 m), Apothecary (913 m), Bonifato (825 m), Erice (751 m), while the hilly area covers most of the territory, including more than ten municipalities, to the west there is an extensive plains (Val di Mazara) and the beautiful coastline, which has calcarenitic sediment is high and rocky north-east, low and sandy to the south. The province is crossed by numerous rivers which, however, have a very short course, except for the Belice in the east, it forms the border with the province of Agrigento, and much of what the province of Palermo. Ice, Marcanzotta, the Mazaro, the Great, Delia, Modione and other children are a common water system, which is integrated with that of the lakes, such as Ruby and that of the Trinity, and with the wealth of sources saline- sulfur. From the point of view of landscape this area is very diverse: alternate continuously sandy beaches and stunning cliffs, rugged cliffs and beautiful coves, golden beaches, caves and tunnels, low cliffs and narrow valleys that are reflected in an unpolluted sea. As well as valleys harmonious alternate wetlands or salt, such as those of Paceco with beautiful windmills. There are numerous protected areas, such as the Natural Reserve of Zingaro and the forest Scorace with its picnic areas or the Islands of the Lagoon. And then the mouth of the river Belice Nature Reserve and surrounding dunes, that of the Grotta di Santa Ninfa, that the wood of Alcamo, that of the lake and Preola Gorghi Tondi. Just as many special areas, such as that of the Baiata lake (reservoir), Bath Water or Lake of Venus (Pantelleria), Dovecote and Lantern (coastal island). In front of the coast of Trapani are the most precious beauty of the province, namely the Egadi Islands, with Favignana, Marettimo and Levanzo, the Strait of Sicily, however, is the largest island in Trapani, volcanic Pantelleria. The beautiful panorama from this province: the hills of Agrigento, the province of Palermo, Ustica, sometimes Cape Bonn, Tunisia. The area is highly seismic, and the climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild and rainy winters in the inner part.
