The Calabria Region
Calabria is a region with a tremendous historical and artistic heritage. Even today we can see the fruits of Greek colonization of the region, of which the Riace Bronzes, preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria are just one of many examples. Also in Reggio, the splendid Aragonese Castle has medieval origins, but it has been restored several times and changed over the centuries. The poet Gabriele d'Annunzio called the Promenade Falcomatà "the most beautiful kilometer in Italy". From here, the view over Sicily is also something special (you can even see Mount Etna in the background).
At Pizzo Calabro, Murat Castle owes its name to the fact of being the place in which Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother in law, was imprisoned and executed. Also in Pizzo Calabro a visit to the wonderful Church of Piedigrotta is recommended; as its name suggests, this is located in a cave, and has surpassed even the Riace Bronzes by number of annual visitors.
One piece of advice we can offer is to drive round the Calabrian coast, stopping at the most beautiful points (there are many to choose from) to get a real feeling of the region.
Tropea, which is only 2 km away from the apartments, has a charm all of its own, with its ancient streets and famous viewing points overlooking the sea, and its monuments, such as the sanctuary of Santa Maria on the island and the Cathedral of Norman foundation.
The shops in Tropea sell a host of local products and crafts typical of neighboring municipalities, including the famous sweet red onions, 'Nnduja di Spilinga (s a spicy spreadable sausage made with pork), pecorino cheese, extra virgin olive oil and wines. Local crafts, such as handmade terracotta, are also of great importance.
Parghelia is located on the famous “Coast of the Gods”, with views to Stromboli and the other Aeolian Islands. The secluded and picturesque Michelino Beach is only a few minutes from the property, and can be accessed via a stepped path; another local beach offering amenities can also be reached on foot in around 15 minutes, while several other beautiful beaches are just short drive away (Zambrone with its long stretch of white sand, Tropea and Capo Vaticano).
The village of Parghelia is just a few minutes' walk from the property, and has a pharmacy, local shops, bars and restaurants, while the nearby town of Tropea (2 km), with its picturesque narrow medieval streets and squares, offers a wide selection of bars, restaurants, shops and other amenities.
