The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Montazels is at the centre of the Cathar region, with hill top castles and the medieval city of Carcassonne to remind you of the fascinating and often tragic history for which this region is renowned. Just across the valley from the cottage is Rennes le Chateau, centre of a mystery still very much alive with many books written and films made on the subject. The mystery is one of sudden wealth, secret codes and a search for treasure in the latter part of the 19th C. The link with the village is very strong - in 1852 Bérenger Saunière, the priest at the centre of the mystery was born in Montazels. Just type Montazels into any search engine and take your pick of the many web sites if you wish to delve deeper. Here you will find the story that gave rise to the Dan Brown book 'The Da Vinci Code'.

Carcassonne

There are several local freshwater lakes with beaches for bathing. The nearest is Arques (7 mins drive). Open air bathing is also available at our local spas, Rennes-les-Bain and Alet-les-Bain. The Mediterranean beaches are 90 minutes drive.

Couiza, at 15 minutes walk is our nearest village & has 2 boulangeries, a supermarket, cash machine, hair salon, pharmacy, 2 bars and 3 restaurants within a 15 minute walk. The larger towns of Quillan and Limoux with are a 20 minute drive. There is a footpath for a walk to Rennes-le-Chateau and numerous Cathar castles can be reached in under an hours drive.

Whether skiing in the Pyrennees, enjoying the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean or exploring hill top Cathar Castles, 'Maisons de Montazels' are ideally placed to enjoy all the Languedoc has to offer.
