Many legends surround the necropolis and its several thousand tombs. The 350 Merovingian sarcophagi were probably the resting place for soldiers killed in 507 A.D. during the battle of Vouillé, between Clovis and the Visigoths. Note the romanitc atmosphere of the tombs around the chapel and fence, which is made exclusively of upright tombstones.
On the banks of the Vienne River, there is a large number of remains dating from Roman to Medieval times in and around Civaux. In the center of town, the Cultural Centre exhibits many different object from these eras in a permanent exhibition entitled Civaux Valley from its origins to the Middle ages.
