The Blagoevgrad Province region

Bansko is a town where three mountain ranges meet. The Rhodope, Pirin and Rila. The Pirin range being the highest and nearest to the town. The area has many interesting places to explore including the Rila Monastery, one of Bulgaria's most visited locations. This area is well known for it's lovely countryside and many traditional villages. There are many hiking trails in the Rila National Park. There is even a bear sanctury, but make sure you visit in a 4x4 car as the road up to the entrance is really off-road!

Bansko

Bansko is a lovely mountain town with great skiing facilities in the Winter but also is a good base for Summer walking holidays with the highest peak being mount Vihren. With it's nest of old stones houses and cobbled streets in the centre, Bansko is easily the most attractive of mountain towns. The Summer also brings the well attended Bansko Jazz festival (in August), with well known names appearing. Bansko has many "mehanas" or traditional resturants, often with an open roaring fire in Winter. The town is also a good base for explorers with mountain bike hire popular as well as off-road car expeitions also available.
