The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
When you visit this area you will be amazed at what there is to do. It boasts many places of interest, both to the locality and on a national scale. Archaeological sites compete with spectacular chateaux and a broad variety of ornamental gardens, each one markedly different from the next.
Prices for entrance to each vary from 8 to 12 Euros. Some offer guided tours while others allow exploration at your own pace with an information sheet/audio guide (both in English if required) to assist your visit.
There are lots of quite roads for you to cycle or walk and if you are quiet you will see lots of wild life. There is a cycle track running along the old railway line starting at Tiviers where you can walk or cycle in safty. You can get off at St. Jean-de-Cole one of the loveliest towns in the Dordogne go for a coffee or lunch and then go back to the track and ether carry on to the end or turn around and go back to the stsrt.
Brantome Approximately 3/4hour drive from the cottage, this is a charming town which is well worth a visit. Brantome is an island encircled by loop of the river Dronne, linked to the outside world by five bridges, which explains its nickname of " Venice of the Perigold"
The Lanouaille / Angoisse area
It is almost impossible to travel in the area without passing a chateau and many are open to the public and have an interesting history to disclose. Here is just a sample of those worthy of a viewing:
Jumilac Le Grande is probably the closest to us and dates, in part, from the XIII Century. As well as daytime tours, an evening tour by candle light is offered, with the guides dressed in period costume. There are 2 pleasant short walks adjacent to the chateau.
Pompadour is an elegant chateau in a central location within the charming town of the same name. As stated above, it is the home of the National Stud and its grounds are in the form of a race course and show jumping ground. There are often events organised for the equestrian fraternity.
Hautefort is probably the most spectacular of chateaux, with its Museum of Medicine, is also worth a visit dating from the XVII century and includes parkland and formal gardens high above the picturesque village around its perimeter.
Other interest are the chateau at Coussac-Bonneval, numerous prehistoric caves, night markets, fishing, tennis, golf, walking, cycling and a new indoor and outdoor swimming pool complex in St. Yrieix la Perche (about 10 mins drive away)
Pompadour with its magnificent chateau is a 25 mins drive away. It is also home to the national centre for horses including a national stud, show jumping, dressage and horse racing on its superb race track. There are numerous restaurants in the area offering the delights of the region – famous for its duck produce, foie gras and truffles.
The medieval village of Segur le Chateau is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France and is only a 15 mins drive away.
