East Devon features all you might expect from the West Country - rolling green hills, stunning coasts, wonderful beaches, bluebell forests, cosy pubs, great fresh food. However, what makes East Devon so special is that you get to enjoy all that and more but without the crowds! Upcott House is located in the heart of East Devon's Jurassic Coast, which is Britain's first natural world heritage site. The SW coast path works it's way through the region connecting many of the pretty coastal villages and towns as well as giving access some of the most stunning coastal vistas in the world.
Food lovers are spoilt for choice as there is an abundance of local-provenance pubs and seafood restaurants nearby. River cottage Canteen is 15 minute drive away and Park Farm HQ is even closer. Mark Hix's renound Hix Oyster and Fish House is in nearby Lyme Regis and the well regarded Mason's Arms gastro pub is located in Branscombe. But you need only head off to one of the many local village pubs and restaurants to experience some fresh produce and down to earth service.
There is plenty to see and do for all ages, including the Pecorama model railway, landscaped gardens and indoor play station located in Beer village, Escot animal centre and Bicton Park gardens and nature reserve. The Seaton to Colyton tramway is a real local treasure, taking in lovely views along the Axe Estuary, which also has great walking and bird watching from its wildlife pods. Beer village has a lovely beach great for fishing trips and Lyme Regis has a popular sandy beach.
Shoppers will love the plethora of independent shops, antiques centres and auction houses in Beer, Sidmouth, Honiton and Lyme Regis.
River Cottage holds a number of events and festivals throughout the year, eg, its Spring and Autumn Fairs, where you can get Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall to sign a copy of his cookbooks, or just grab a coffee and delicious meal in the Axminster River Cottage Canteen. Further west, catch a Stuart Line cruise from Topsham, a pretty harbour town with Pebblebed local winery and Darts Farm produce centre.
