Thea's cottage is situated near the peaceful village of Gunnerside in Swaledale which offers plenty of choice in outdoor activities. Walking, cycling, horse riding and mountain biking all allow for great ways to explore the countryside. Bird watching and photography are also common and more relaxing ways to enjoy the scenery. For those who love to take in the history, Swaledale museum is an excellent place to visit. Just seven miles away is Reeth, one of Swaledale's other stunning villages packed with things to do. Marrick Priory is an outdoor education centre offering a huge variety of activities to suit all tastes such as rope climbing, orienteering, kayaking, guided walks, gorge scrambling and many more. Both fishing and horse riding are also available within Reeth as another opportunity to explore the outdoors. For those with young children, Reeth has a great playground for brilliant fun! Once you have taken in all the beautiful countryside, Reeth also offers plenty of café's and little shops to relax and have a look around. Further activities in Swaledale that offer activities to suit the whole family are Hazel Brow Farm involving a petting area where you can get up and close with the farm animals, demonstration areas and a playground. The Old Gang Mine is a brilliant place to explore the ruins of a previous lead mine with paths that are suitable for all ages. If you are lucky enough to visit at the time of the year when Swaledale festival is occurring, it is a lively and vibrant place with many different styles of live music!
