The Soller valley is a little oasis on the North West coast of the island. Traditionally a fruit growing area based around the fabulous sharp oranges, famous in the area, you will see an abundance of lemons, olives & almond trees all around.
The town itself is some 3km inland, from the Port de Sóller, in this large, bowl-shaped valley that also includes the village of Fornalutx and the hamlets of Biniaraix and Binibassi. A famous historic tram, the Orange Express links Sóller to Port de Sóller.
Sóller is also linked by a historic railway, the Ferrocarril de Sóller, and by a straight A road with a toll tunnel, to the capital, Palma. The Ferrocaril was built on the profits from the orange and lemon trade and completed in 1911. The Andratx-Pollença road also runs through the valley & the views as you travel along it are breathtaking.
Sóller and the port are about 30 minutes drive from Palma Airport, and have good connections with railway, tram and bus services. The valley and its surrounding mountain range, the 'Serra de Tramuntana', a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a favourite destination for people from all over the world, especially those who enjoy walking, nature, ecotourism, swimming or simply a peaceful rest away from the hustle and bustle of the better-known tourist locations.
Port Sóller makes you feel you're in the Italian Riviera rather than on Majorcas west coast!
Surrounded by mountains the port is a picture perfect setting for holidays by the sea - golden sand, clear calm blue sea, a horseshoe bay with lighthouses at either end. The pretty port area has now been modernised and is home to trendy eateries and a classy marina. The own old fashioned wooden trams which take you on a scenic trip up the hill to the main town of Sóller.
Both the port & the town have plenty of excellent restaurants and the busy beachside road has been diverted to create a lovely pedestrianised 'paseo' that runs from the old port area, past the marina and around the picturesque bay. The beach is perfect for a quiet morning swim, sunrise yoga or an invigorating run, a trip to the nearby Jumeirah Hotel & Spa would bring some top pampering.
Puerto de Sóller is a popular place for those wanting a more relaxed holiday with quality eateries and access to good transport. The buses, from Sóller, and boat trips from the harbour let you explore this fascinating area whilst the tram turns into a train at Sóller station and continues on up through the mountains and over to Palma City. In winter these transport links and its close proximity to hiking trails makes it a great base for walkers and cyclists.
Sóller the town is full of narrow cobbled streets, friendly locals, a marvellous square lined with bustling little cafes and dominated by an imposing Cathedral and a regular Saturday market. In the art gallery by the station you can see works by Picasso and Miro, the botanical gardens have many interesting species of plants, enjoy the modernist building & style of Can Prunera with it's wonderful furniture & varied selection of art.
