The Sicily region

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea; along with surrounding minor islands

The island has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild and wet winters and hot, dry summers.

The main agricultural products are citrons, oranges, lemons, olives, olive oil, almonds, grapes, Sicilian pistachios and wine; cattle, mules, donkeys, and sheep are raised. The island has a long history of producing a variety of noted cuisines and wines.Every part of Sicily has its speciality ,for example Cassata and Cannolo are typical of Palermo, even if available everywhere in Sicily, as is Granita, a Catania speciality.

Lipari - the largest of the "seven pearls" - The seven volcanic islands constitute an excellent natural paradise and as such this natural and cultural heritage is protected by UNESCO. Lipari is a paradise for scuba divers, for excursions, and is ideal for romantic cruises. There is a heartfelt atmosphere in Lipari noticeable in the centre of the island, where the cafes and shops offer a return to the “dolce vita” or sweet life of the past in Italy. In addition to the intense perfume of hibiscus and broom flowers, there is the world famous Malvasia wine. Here you can enjoy freshly caught swordfish and lobster.

Lipari, a concentration of sea, city and mountain. Here nothing is missing, every wish can be fulfilled. If you circumnavigate along its coast it seems to have its own life, always with the need to change appearance, as to mock those who browse around.

Lipari is a special island, with a landscape that changes quickly from coast to the deserted areas, wild urbanized spots with groups of houses, a rocky coast which reflects all the shades of green and vegetation colors to white pumice that, as in a mirage, guides you towards depths that seem clear water pools. On the island of Lipari, a beautiful pearl of the Mediterranean Sea Rose Villa is located in the hystoric centre near the little beach called Portinente.

Aeolian Islands

Lipari town is a very pleasant place, with pretty streets and lanes perfect for wandering around. There are some elegant historic town-houses as well as plenty of more humble island-dwellings, with balconies bedecked with flowers, washing, onions and peppers. The town has a very cheery atmosphere, and although tourists must get used to touts offering boat trips, the local people in Lipari are all very friendly and welcoming. There are a lot of appealing shops selling souvenirs and good-quality local food and drink; including huge quantities of the local capers and Malvasia wine - both very good items to take home, if your luggage will allow it.

If you explore the streets of Lipari, you will soon come across traces of the island's ancient history. Greek tombs lie open to the sky in parkland (generally closed but visible through fences). But the most impressive historic site in Lipari is thecastello, the castle. This fortified headland is more than a castle; it is a citadel and the heart of the town was once here.

The traditional entrance route is through a defensive gateway, but there is also an additional direct stairway piercing the fortress walls. This is because, when the hub of the town shifted down to the lower streets, there was talk of switching the town's cathedral to a different church. Rather than have this happen, the authorities cut through the castle walls to provide easy direct access to the cathedral from the main part of town. A stroll through the citadel is a must for visitors to Lipari; those with an interest in the past will also wish to visit the museum, housed in several buildings within the castle walls.
