Villa Athina is ideal for those wanting to stay in an enchanting stone villa with unrivalled views and a private and relaxing setting with easy access to beaches, shops and tavernas.
The villa has been named after the Greek Goddess Athina who ruled the arts, literature, intellectual activity and reason, and you will understand why once you have spent a fantastic holiday relaxing at this very special villa. The artistic Australian owners have spent a considerable amount of time creating a very attractive and comfortable home which has air-conditioning in the living room and 2 upstairs bedrooms, and thanks to the stone walls and north east corner location, the downstairs bedroom stays naturally cool and has a fan. For the cooler nights at the start and end of the season the A/C units double up as heaters and there is a fireplace. The intelligent layout over 2 floors means that none of the spacious bedrooms share an adjoining wall, which may particularly suit families who are sharing but still enjoy moments of peace and solitude.

The property has been carved into the rock and creatively landscaped in order to incorporate the natural stone outcrops and stone walls, and maximise the privacy. There is a grass lawn at the rear of the property, and a selection of colourful oleander bushes, fuchsia bougainvillea, geraniums, and small fruit trees..
The elevated hillside position means that the villa is often blessed in the summer by refreshing breezes that come in off the sea, and on the occasional windy day there is a rear terrace that is perfectly sheltered by the villa itself and is shaded by a bamboo topped pergola to which climbing grapevines are being introduced.
The pool terrace has sun-beds, an umbrella, a dining table and chairs, and a traditional built-in barbeque/oven that can be lit with either wood or charcoal and is perfect for grilling the delicious fresh produce that you can buy locally. The dining area will undoubtedly be the focus of many a congenial meal and is adjacent to the family friendly private pool which has a built-in bench at one end where you can cool off during the long hot summer days, or sit with a cocktail in the evening whilst the water laps around you.
An array of garden furniture invites you to do nothing more taxing than lie back and marvel at the gorgeous sunsets, or on a warm clear night look at the twinkling stars, and the lights in the bay from the ferries that go past on their nightly journey to Athens.
Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.
As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.
Villa Athina is located in the heart of The Apokoronas Region just east of the beautiful town of Chania. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind Chania's harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the famous covered market, and many local shops selling handicrafts, textiles, jewellery and hand made ceramics. Visit 'Leather Lane' for outstanding hand made leather bargains.
The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, birdwatching and looking at the wild flowers. All in all Crete is absolutely perfect for your Villa holiday.
Kokkino Horio main taverna and mini market are a 10 - 15 minute walk from Villa Athina. The family run-taverna is shaded by weeping willow trees, and has delicious food and very friendly owners (Zacharias and his son Yiannis) who know everything about the village and the surrounding area. During the summer months there are occasional live Cretan music nights at the taverna (once a month or so), which are a lot of fun. Kokkino Horio (“red village” in Greek) was the main village set for the film “Zorba the Greek”. There are little whitewashed houses and narrow streets that wind around the village centre. At the village kafenion you can find older locals who were used as extras in the film, and they will happily show you photos of themselves with Anthony Quinn. Just 18 minutes walk from Villa Athina is the famous glass blowing workshop which has a taverna with organic food and wine. Here you can watch recycled glass being blown in the traditional manner, into amazingly beautiful products including lampshades, ornaments, decanters, plates and bowls. A third taverna with pretty views is located on the outskirts of the village.
The lovely village of Almyrida is only 4km from Villa Athina, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 7 excellent tavernas, 10 café/bars, 2 bakeries, a wonderful jewellery shop, 5 mini-markets, 4 gift shops, a pharmacy, an organic fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, a butcher's shop, an off-license (liquor store), and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, horse riding, and guided walks and coach excursions. Also in Almyrida there is a scuba diving office, and a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, and a scuba diving office.
A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, lace makers in Gavalohori, and silk makers in Kalamitsi. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local winery can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a free copy of the guide book "Crete on the Road" by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.
