The Poitou-Charentes region

The Charente is situated in South West France and is known to be the second sunniest region in France. It is steeped in history and has wonderful countryside with the famous beautiful toffee coloured Limousin cattle supplying the best beef around.

There is also an abundance of markets, festivals, wine tasting and restaurants around so you really will be spoilt for choice knowing how you will spend your time here. Further away there is the Medieval large theme park Puy de fou, Futuroscope at Poitiers and Vallee de Singes (gorilla park).

Montemboeuf is situated just 3 kms away with a small supermarket, bank, chemist, post office, butchers, bakers, tennis courts and bars and a little further away there is Chasseneuil-sur-Bonnieure with larger supermarkets, small boutiques, bars and restaurants and a cinema. The historic city of Angoulême is approx 25 mins drive and a little further, the cognac region.

The lacs de la Charente are only 13 mins drive and the music festival at Confolens normally takes place Aug/Sept each year. The chateaux at La Rochefoucauld is well worth a visit with a chance to dress up in medieval costumes. There is a water park/leisure centre at Angoulême.

The village of Oradour-sur-Glane is only an hours drive with it's massacred village taken place on 10 June 1944 during World War II. The town of Rochechouart (the country of the météorite) is 25 mins drive near the border of Charente and Haute-Vienne. All of which can be searched on the internet for more details.
