The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne or Perigord as it is also known, is a beautiful area. Around Tourtoirac, the countryside is thickly wooded with many steep valleys, cliffs and medieval villages to visit. There are numerous castles and caves - including those inhabited by man some 35,000 years ago. Medieval market towns like Perigueux, Brantome and Montignac are within easy reach, with plenty of opportunities for canoeing. The stunning town of Sarlat and the huge castles of the Dordogne are a little to the south.

Hautefort

Tourtoirac is just a 10 minute walk from Les Taloches. It is a pretty village on the river Auvezere with a 1000-year-old abbey, a couple of restaurants, a general store and an excellent bakers. The river is very popular for canoeing and paddling, dam building and catching tiddlers. On the outskirts of the village are the Caves of Tourtoirac, famed for their stalagtites and stalagmites, while just 8km away is the beautiful chateau of Hautefort. This is delightful walking country with miles of tracks just at our gate. We have bikes available to borrow for all ages.
