Monte Canelas is quite residential area part of the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande located within the district of Portimao, 5km from the EN125 Penina towards Alcalar, surrounded by farmland, orchards and woodlands.

Alcalar is a national monument and a megalithic burial ground.

There are many footpaths which can also be used by mountain bikers and in the summer walkers can follow the dry riverbeds of the Torre and the Farelo, both contributories to Alvor river during the winter,

Alvor

The village of Mexilhoeira Grande dates back to the 12th century is worth visiting as in its elevated position it has great views over Alvor and the Bay.

Alcalar is open to visitors and on display are the details of its discovery, restoration and history of the area.

Portimao has the Sardine Museum housed in a former Sardine canning factory which shows how sardines were processed in the time when Portimao had over 30 sardine processing plants.

Silves Castle built by the Moores is only a half an hour drive from Quinta Velha

Slide & Splash waterpark in Estombar is an attraction aimed at children as is Zoomarine in Guia.

The water resevoir at Bravura (Odexiace) offers great walks along footpath through its wooded banks
