The Calabria region

Calabria is a region in the south of Italy. The capital is Cosenza. It is a city rich of culture and history, located on the Ionian Sea.

Calabria is located on the point of the boot, in the north border on the region Basilicata, in the south west the sea separate Calabria and Sicily. On the west coast is the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the East coast the Ionian Sea.

Calabria is characterised by a double attraction: sea and mountains.

The coast has a length of 740 km with marvelous sandy beaches, little bays and crystal clear water.

90% of the region are hills and mountains in the inland. With departure from the beach in 20-30 minutes you reach centenary old forests and mountains with peaks up to 1900 meters.

White and large beaches alternate with little bays with stony or sandy beaches.

Many beaches on the west coast are embedded in mountains that fall away sharply on the water, some beaches you can reach only by boat from the sea.

The beaches on the Ionian Sea are very large and fine sandy beaches. Many of them are untouched and not used for tourism. The east coast declines gradually and is characterised by a charming landscape of hills.

In Calabria there are three climate zones. On the Tyrrenian Sea the climate is subtropical with sparsely precipitations in the winter month. On the Ionian Sea the climate is hot and dry with low precipitation. In the altitudes of the mountain ranges it is colder compared with the coast and snow falls until 1200 meters in the winter months. The average temperatures, depending on the area, are between 7 °C and 15 °C in January and between 26 °C and 34 °C in the months July and August. In Calabria the sun shines 320 days in the year, it is one of the sunniest area in Europe.
